Billie Eilish Makes Her Feature Film Acting Debut in The Bell Jar.
Billie Eilish is stepping into a completely new artistic chapter. The 24‑year‑old Grammy and Oscar winner has been photographed on the Toronto set of The Bell Jar, marking her first-ever feature film acting role.
A Striking Transformation into Esther Greenwood
New set photos reveal Eilish nearly unrecognizable as Esther Greenwood, the protagonist of Sylvia Plath’s iconic 1963 novel. Sporting auburn-brown mid‑century hair, bright red lipstick, pearl earrings, and a meticulously styled vintage outfit, she fully embraces the 1950s aesthetic.
Her look includes a red pointelle sweater, a checkered pleated skirt, matching T‑strap heels and a coordinating handbag — a visual homage to Plath’s era.
Other images show Eilish walking through a recreated 1950s New York City street, surrounded by women in colorful retro outfits, reinforcing the film’s period authenticity.

Sarah Polley Returns Behind the Camera
The adaptation is directed and written by Sarah Polley, the Academy Award–winning filmmaker behind Women Talking.
The Bell Jar follows Esther Greenwood, a young writer navigating ambition, identity, societal expectations and mental health struggles after landing a prestigious magazine internship in New York. The novel remains a cornerstone of feminist literature and a haunting exploration of psychological pressure on young women.

- Carey Mulligan as Mrs. Greenwood, Esther’s mother
- Connor Storrie in an undisclosed role

Intense Scenes and Period Detail

A New Milestone in Eilish’s Career

Filming for The Bell Jar began in late June 2026 and will continue throughout the summer in Toronto. Focus Features is producing and distributing the film, though no official release date has been announced.
