A Long‑Awaited Return
Parton had been noticeably absent from public events, including her own birthday celebration in January, and previously postponed her Las Vegas shows due to unspecified health issues. Her appearance at Dollywood marked a significant moment for fans who had grown concerned about her condition.
Despite the difficult year, Parton greeted the crowd in good spirits. Speaking with Dollywood Parks & Resorts president Eugene Naughton, she offered a heartfelt update:

Grief and Recovery
Parton also opened up about the emotional strain she has faced since the death of her husband, Carl Dean, in March of last year. The couple had been together for more than 60 years.
“I just kind of got worn down and worn out, grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on,” she admitted.
She explained that the combination of grief and stress left her needing time to rebuild herself “spiritually, emotionally, and physically.” Still, she emphasized that she is on the mend and feeling stronger.

Humor Amid Heartache
Even while discussing deeply personal struggles, Parton’s trademark humor shone through. She joked with the audience about Naughton being her “new husband,” before quickly clarifying that she isn’t dating anyone.
She added with a smile:
“I think Carl Dean’s waiting for me. If I should show up at the pearly gates with somebody else, he would not like that.”
Looking Ahead
Although she acknowledged that she hadn’t taken proper care of herself in the months following her husband’s passing, Parton made it clear that she has no intention of retiring anytime soon.
“Don’t worry about me quittin’ the business because God hasn’t said anything about stopping yet,” she said. “But I believe He is telling me to slow down right now so I can be ready for more big adventures with all of you.”
Her message was one of resilience, gratitude, and optimism—reassuring fans that while she may be taking things at a gentler pace, she is far from stepping away from the spotlight.
