Before his passing in 2016, director Garry Marshall discussed a potential third film set in Manhattan. After his death, his daughter Kathleen Marshall became involved in continuing the franchise.
The screenplay is currently being written by Flora Greeson (The High Note). No plot details have been released, but Meg Cabot — author of the original book series — revealed in June 2026 that she has read several drafts and that the latest script is her “favorite” so far.
