Anne Hathaway Says Work on The Princess Diaries 3Is Ongoing, Plans to Return to Genovia After The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Anne Hathaway is in the middle of one of the busiest years of her career, but she hasn’t forgotten about a project fans have been waiting on for more than a decade. The actress confirmed in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview that development on The Princess Diaries 3 is still active — even if the film hasn’t yet been officially greenlit.

“One hundred percent — we’re constantly working on it”
Speaking alongside Meryl Streep while promoting The Devil Wears Prada 2, Hathaway said that the long‑anticipated third installment remains a priority for her. According to the actress, the unexpected timing of the Prada sequel — which she filmed throughout last summer — temporarily pushed the Genovia project aside.
“It became impossible to focus on both at the same time,” she explained, adding that her “intention is to make Princess Diaries hopefully next,” though she emphasized that the film is not yet confirmed by the studio.
Streep chimed in with a reminder that the team needs “the right script,” a sentiment Hathaway echoed. After seeing the level of anticipation surrounding The Devil Wears Prada 2, she said she understands that expectations for a third Princess Diaries film are “very, very high,” and that the team must “knock it out of the park.”

A decade of development and a beloved legacy
Hathaway’s breakout role as Mia Thermopolis in the 2001 film adaptation of Meg Cabot’s novel launched her into stardom. The movie followed Mia’s transformation from an awkward San Francisco teenager into the heir of the fictional kingdom of Genovia, guided by her grandmother, Queen Clarisse, played by Julie Andrews. The 2004 sequel, Royal Engagement, continued Mia’s journey as she prepared to take the throne.
Director Garry Marshall, who helmed both films, revealed in 2016 that he and Hathaway hoped to make a third installment. His death later that year halted momentum, but the idea never disappeared.
In 2019, Hathaway confirmed that a script existed and that both she and Andrews were willing to return. Then, in 2022, reports surfaced that Disney had revived the project. In October 2024, filmmaker Adele Lim (Joy Ride) officially joined as director — news Hathaway celebrated on Instagram with the captions “Miracles happen” and “The fairy tale continues.”

She will also appear in several high‑profile projects throughout the year:

- The End of Oak Street (August), alongside Ewan McGregor
- Verity (October), an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, featuring Josh Hartnett and Dakota Johnson

Is Mia Thermopolis finally returning?
While The Princess Diaries 3 has not yet received an official green light, Hathaway’s comments suggest that the project is very much alive — and that she remains committed to revisiting the role that defined the early years of her career. For now, fans will have to wait for the “right script” and the right moment, but the actress’s enthusiasm indicates that Genovia may not be far away.
