Tom Cruise’s Wild Ride: How the Top Gun Creators Convinced Him to Join the Film.
The story behind Tom Cruise signing on to play Maverick in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun is just as dramatic—and a bit messier—than fans might expect. According to screenwriter Jack Epps Jr. and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, all it took was one intense flight with the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels… and Cruise vomiting on himself.

Writing Maverick for Cruise
Epps, who co‑wrote the script with Jim Cash, revealed that he always envisioned Cruise as the lead. At the time, the actor was already gaining momentum thanks to films like Risky Business and The Outsiders.
“We wrote this with Tom Cruise in mind,” Epps recalled. “He’s such an energetic actor—he connects with the audience.”
When Epps handed the nearly finished script to Bruckheimer, he told him to “think Tom Cruise.” The producers loved the idea. The challenge was getting Cruise to commit.

The Flight That Changed Everything
Cruise was hesitant, partly because he was sporting long hair for Ridley Scott’s Legend. To sway him, Bruckheimer arranged a flight with the Blue Angels in El Centro, California.
The pilots didn’t know who Cruise was. Seeing a young guy with a ponytail, they reportedly joked, “We’ll give this hippie a real ride.”
They did exactly that.
Epps says the pilots took Cruise up, pushed him through intense maneuvers, and the actor ended up vomiting on himself. But instead of being shaken, Cruise climbed out of the jet and declared:
“I love this.”
Moments later, he called Bruckheimer and said, “I’m in.”
A Blockbuster Legacy
Directed by Tony Scott, Top Gun became the highest‑grossing film of 1986, earning more than $350 million worldwide. It also cemented Cruise as a global superstar. The film featured a standout cast including Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis, and Tom Skerritt.
In 2022, Cruise returned for Top Gun: Maverick, which became one of the most successful sequels in cinema history. He described it as a “love letter to aviation.”
Both films were re‑released in theaters on May 13 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original.
