Jennifer Garner is back in the spotlight promoting The Five Star Weekend, but during her appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast, she shifted the conversation toward a painful chapter of her past — the years when paparazzi relentlessly pursued her family.
The Chaos Before the Law
Garner recalled the period before 2013, when she and Halle Berry fought for legislation in California to protect children from aggressive photographers. Her three children — now older, with one in college and two in high school — were once at the center of a media frenzy that she describes as “totally ludicrous.”
She detailed extreme situations that went far beyond harmless celebrity snapshots:
- Fifteen cars running red lights to follow her through an intersection.
- Vehicles driving onto private lawns, even steep hillsides, just to get a shot.
- Youth soccer games disrupted, with leagues asking her family not to attend because 20 cars would swarm the field.
- Pediatrician visits blocked, leaving her unable to enter the building while holding a sick child.
- Children knocked over outside preschool, as photographers rushed to capture images of her or Ben Affleck.
Garner emphasized that while her family is privileged, the danger was real — not just for them, but for everyone around them.

Fighting Back
In 2013, Garner and Berry testified before the California State Assembly Committee on Public Safety. Their efforts helped pass a law restricting the ability of paparazzi to photograph children without parental consent. It was a turning point, but not a complete solution.

Two Decades of Being Followed
Garner revealed that even today, two photographers follow her daily, both assigned to her for more than 20 years. One of them has become an unexpected constant in her life.
She described their relationship as “odd respect,” shaped by real-life moments — including a time when she ran toward him for safety because she trusted him more than a stranger who seemed threatening. Yet she has also called the police on him “a million times,” begging for a simple walk around the block with her kids and dog.
“It’s kind of a Stockholm Syndrome thing,” she admitted.
