Following the news that she was in talks to reprise her role in the new I Know What You Did Last Summer film, Jennifer Love Hewitt has officially closed a deal to return to the franchise, announcing the news on social media. She joins her former co-star Freddie Prinze Jr. alongside new cast members Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Haur-King.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing the sequel to the horror film series, which was written by Sam Lansky and Kaytin Robinson from a draft by Leah McKendrick.
Neal Moritz is producing. Sony Pictures will release the film in theaters on July 18, 2025.
The original film follows four young friends (played by Prinze, Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe) who are bound by a tragic accident who reunite when they find themselves being stalked by a maniac with a hook in their small seaside town.
I Know What You Did Last Summer , loosely based on the Lois Duncan novel of the same name, was a hit that led to the development of the sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer , which premiered in 1998. A direct-to-video third installment in the franchise, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006), is considered a stand-alone sequel as the story deviates from the first two installments and had no original cast reprising their roles.
Hewitt can currently be seen starring on the Fox show 9-1-1 , created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. She will next be seen starring, directing, and producing the Lifetime film The Holiday Junkie . She starred in, produced, and directed several episodes of the network series Ghost Whisperer , which ran for five seasons from 2005-2010, and starred in and produced the cable film The Client List , for which she received a Golden Globe nomination.
She is represented by Vault Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof + Fishman LLP.
