Mel Gibson Unveils First Look at His Two‑Part Biblical Epic The Resurrection of the Christ.

Mel Gibson has officially revealed the first glimpse of The Resurrection of the Christ, the long‑anticipated sequel to his 2004 global phenomenon The Passion of the Christ. Lionsgate confirmed that filming has wrapped after an extensive 134‑day shoot across several historic Italian locations, including Rome, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, Brindisi (Torre Guaceto) and Matera.

A Project Two Decades in the Making

Gibson described the film as one of the most significant undertakings of his career.

“This film represents a major part of my life’s work, and it has demanded everything of me as a filmmaker and as an artist,” he said in a statement.

He emphasized that the project is not merely a movie but a mission he has carried for over 20 years — an effort to tell what he believes is the most important story in human history.

Reuniting with many of the original collaborators from The Passion of the Christ allowed him to bring the sequel to life exactly as he envisioned, supported by longtime partners at Lionsgate.

Cast and Two‑Part Release Strategy

The sequel features a new ensemble cast, including:

  • Jaakko Ohtonen
  • Mariela Garriga
  • Pier Luigi Pasino
  • Kasia Smutniak
  • Riccardo Scamarcio
  • Rupert Everett

Lionsgate confirmed that the story will unfold across two films:

  • Part One: May 6, 2027
  • Part Two: May 25, 2028

Both dates coincide with Ascension Day, underscoring the spiritual significance of the narrative.

The Legacy of The Passion of the Christ

Released in 2004, The Passion of the Christ became a cultural and box‑office milestone:

  • $83 million opening weekend
  • $370 million domestic gross
  • Over $610 million worldwide
  • Nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Makeup at the 77th Academy Awards

It remains the second‑highest‑grossing R‑rated film in North American history, surpassed only by Deadpool & Wolverine.

A Sequel That Goes Beyond the Resurrection

Gibson has hinted that the sequel will explore far more than the resurrection itself. In a 2022 interview, he explained that the narrative will weave together events from the past, present and future — even touching on metaphysical or “otherworldly” realms.

He described the structure as non‑linear, ambitious and expansive, suggesting a film that blends biblical storytelling with elements that verge on the cosmic.

What Comes Next?

With production complete and the first look now public, anticipation for The Resurrection of the Christ is set to intensify. The original film reshaped religious cinema, and the sequel — now a two‑part epic — aims to push those boundaries even further.
