Miley Cyrus has admitted that she began teasing a Hannah Montana 20th anniversary special long before Disney had any plans to create one. The singer and actress revealed that her bold strategy was intentional — and inspired by none other than her godmother, Dolly Parton.
In a conversation with Variety, Miley explained that Dolly once gave her a piece of advice that stuck with her for years: if you want something to happen, start promoting it before it exists. According to Miley, that tactic leaves decision‑makers with little room to say no.
“She told me that if you want something to happen, promote it before it exists. Then no one can say no,” Miley recalled.
Taking that advice to heart, she began publicly discussing a 20th‑anniversary special — even though no such project was in development at the time.

Miley also reflected on the enduring connection fans have with Hannah Montana, noting that the character remains deeply meaningful to people around the world.
“It’s not just a TV show. I see daily how important Hannah is to people,” she said, adding that fans still bring her Hannah Montana merchandise and ask about a potential new season.
Disney executive Charlie Andrews confirmed that Miley was determined to make the anniversary special a reality — and that her passion for the fans guided every creative decision.
Miley emphasized that the project was never meant to be ironic or a viral stunt. Instead, she wanted to honor the music and emotional legacy of the series.
“We did not want irony. This is not a joke… My point of doing this was not to break the internet,” she explained.
Her goal, she said, was to ensure fans “feel seen,” acknowledging that their loyalty shaped her entire career.
The Hannah Montana 20th anniversary special will premiere on Disney+ on March 24.
