The new adaptation will reintroduce Pippi to a new generation of viewers while honoring the spirit of Lindgren’s original stories. The series follows Pippi as she arrives in a quiet town with her trademark mismatched stockings, fiery hair, freckles, a monkey perched on her shoulder, a bag full of gold coins, and a horse she can lift with ease. Her arrival turns the world of Tommy, Annika, and the entire community upside down.
Award‑winning screenwriter Sara Daddy will pen the series. Known for The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland, Olga Da Polga, and Tulipop Tales, Daddy says she feels a personal connection to Pippi’s adventurous spirit. She describes the project as a “dream,” emphasizing her goal to preserve Pippi’s independence, imagination, and superhuman strength for today’s young audiences.

StudioCanal will handle worldwide distribution, while its Kids & Family division will lead merchandising efforts in France and the U.K.

A Growing Global Legacy
Pippi Longstocking remains one of the most enduring characters in children’s literature. Lindgren’s books have sold over 90 million copies, been translated into 80 languages, and continue to sell 1.5 million copies annually. The character celebrates her 80th anniversary in 2025, making this reboot especially timely.
Max Hallén, CEO of The Astrid Lindgren Company, emphasized Pippi’s lasting impact: her courage, independence, and playful defiance continue to inspire children worldwide.
Even public figures such as Michelle Obama have cited Pippi as an early literary influence, praising her strength and spirited nature.
Beyond the Series: A Feature Film in Development
In addition to the animated series, StudioCanal and Heyday Films are also developing a new Pippi Longstocking feature film, signaling a broader revitalization of the franchise.
StudioCanal continues to expand its family entertainment portfolio, following the global success of the Paddington films and upcoming projects such as a Mr. Men Little Miss feature and a new collaboration with Aardman on Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom.
