A newly published forensic report has reignited long‑standing conspiracy theories surrounding the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain — but Seattle police have swiftly dismissed its conclusions, refusing to reopen the case nearly 32 years later.
Cobain died in April 1994 at the age of 27. His death was officially ruled a suicide caused by a self‑inflicted gunshot wound, a finding that has remained unchanged for decades. However, a peer‑reviewed paper authored by two independent forensic specialists has challenged that ruling, alleging that Cobain may have been the victim of homicide.
According to the report, the authors claim to have re‑examined publicly available autopsy materials and evidence from the scene. They argue that Cobain may have been incapacitated — possibly through a forced heroin overdose — before being fatally shot. The paper, published in the International Journal of Forensic Sciences, asserts that his body was later staged to resemble a suicide.

Despite the dramatic claims, the Seattle Police Department has firmly rejected the report’s conclusions. In a statement provided to the Daily Mail, the department reiterated its long‑held position: “Our detective concluded that he died by suicide, and this continues to be the position held by this department.”
At the time of his death, Cobain was married to musician Courtney Love. The couple’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, is now 33. So far, no members of the Cobain family have commented on the renewed speculation.
