Three European co-productions feature on the winners list of the 47th 3 Continents Festival

Three European co-productions feature on the winners list of the 47th 3 Continents Festival, which unspooled in Nantes between 21 and 29 November boasting a record number of attendees (23,000 viewers).

And the audience decided to honour Mamadou Khouma Gueye’s first feature film, the documentary Attachment (Liti Liti), which is produced by Senegal, Belgium and France.

Unveiled in competition at the Visions du Réel Festival, Attachment takes us to Guinaw Rail, a forgotten neighbourhood on the outskirts of Dakar which is losing its inhabitants. Bulldozers are demolishing houses along the route of the Region Express Train, a symbol of President Macky Sall’s “Emerging Senegal”.

Before it disappears and is transformed beyond all recognition, the director films the realm of his childhood and his mother as she recalls a life lived behind the Rails… The movie is produced by Sine Films (Senegal) in co-production with Twenty Nine Studio & Production (Belgium) and Les Films du Bilboquet (France). World sales are entrusted to Wawkumba Film (Senegal).

For its part, the international competition jury (including France’s India Hair, Brazil’s Tatiana Leite, Iran’s Sina Ataeian Dena and Colombia’s Franco Lolli) singled out Yoon Ga-eun’s South Korean fiction title The World of Love (presented in Toronto’s Platform section and selected to compete in Warsaw) as its winner, as well as awarding the Silver Balloon to the documentary Hair, Paper, Water…
 [+] by Vietnam’s Minh Quy Truong and Belgium’s Nicolas Graux, which previously scooped the Golden Leopard in Locarno’s Filmmakers of the Present line-up and whose production was outsourced to Belgium and France.

A Special Mention was won by another European co-production, a work of fiction on this occasion, thanks to the acting performance of Argentine actress Anika Bootz, who starred in fellow Argentine Iván Fund’s The Message [+] (awarded the Jury Prize in Berlin and co-produced by Spain and Uruguay).
