Why J.K. Rowling’s Name Is in the Epstein Documents — And What She Says About It

J.K. Rowling’s name has surfaced in the newly released Epstein files, but not for the reasons some online critics initially assumed. The latest batch of documents—part of millions detailing the activities of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein—mentions the Harry Potter author in connection with an incident dating back to April 2018.

According to reports, Epstein attempted to attend the Broadway opening party for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Producers allegedly sent him tickets, but when he arrived at the venue, he was turned away at the door. Once this detail became public, social media speculation erupted, with some users suggesting that Rowling herself had invited him.

The author quickly shut down those claims. Writing on X, she stated that neither she nor her team had ever met, contacted, or invited Epstein to anything, calling the rumors “beyond silly.”

The documents indicate that publicist Peggy Siegal—an associate of Epstein’s—was the one who sought access to the event. She reportedly contacted Colin Callender of Playground Entertainment, describing Epstein only as “a very important friend.” Callender later said he had no idea Epstein was the person in question and confirmed that Epstein was not on the official guest list. The financier ultimately received incorrect tickets, which led to him being denied entry.

The resurfaced story arrives at a time when Rowling continues to face public criticism for her views on transgender rights, which have strained her relationships with several Harry Potter actors. Despite the controversy, she remains creatively involved in the franchise and is currently serving as an executive producer on the upcoming Harry Potter TV series.
